Sisters of Mercy by Caroline Overington is the haunting crime novel story of two sisters - one has vanished, the other is behind bars...

Snow Delaney was born a generation and a world away from her sister, Agnes.

Until recently, neither even knew of the other's existence. They came together only for the reading of their father's will - when Snow discovered, to her horror, that she was not the sole beneficiary of his large estate.

Now Snow is in prison and Agnes is missing, disappeared in the eerie red dust that blanketed Sydney from dawn on September 23, 2009.

With no other family left, Snow turns to crime journalist Jack Fawcett, protesting her innocence in a series of defiant letters from prison. Has she been unfairly judged? Or will Jack's own research reveal a story even more shocking than the one Snow wants to tell?

With Sisters of Mercy Caroline Overington once again proves she is one of the most exciting new novelists of recent years.

I have loved other books by Caroline Overington and this one promised to be just as good....I was however disappointed. The main character Snow is completely unlikeable which is fine....but she is the main character that we really get to know. The journalist pops in and out trying to dig for information but he is very one dimensional and there seems to be no balance for the negative feelings raised for Snow. The ending was also a let down and made the story seem almost pointless. It was a good look into the world of the state system for foster carers (like other CO books) and it does rally passion for the people abusing the system and not taking care of the people entrusted to them....maybe I am a bit fairy tale spoilt but I do like an ending that ties everything up nicely!

Sisters of Mercy edition by Caroline Overington Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Another brilliant book for Caroline Overington. She is deadly accurate with her knowledge of the bumbling government systems and her story telling is outstanding.
I haven't read a book by Caroline Overington that I haven't enjoyed yet- this is no exception to the rule.
The book in places was a bit raw regarding mental patient issues- with some rather graphic details, that did leave me taking a back step as I continued reading- but continue I have done, I nejoyed all the way through- my only dissapointment, was the ending ? leaving one very much in limbo how the story ended - one wanted more closure- but still apart from that a great read
I couldn't go to sleep until I found out what happened in the end of Sisters of Mercy. I liked how the story unfolded told by different characters but it was still easy to follow. I also liked that it is Australian and how childhood traumas influence the way people are shaped as adults.

This was a well written and thought out plot centering on a topic that has had current affairs coverage in Australia in recent years.
While the work is fiction the facts are not far removed from the plot.
The characters were believable.
The book even left us with some unanswered questions. Everyone doesn't live happy ever after which is more like life.
I am encouraged to read another of her works.
This was a gripping tale - very difficult to put this book down. I can't say it was enjoyable tho' as it contained some thought-provoking tales of life in our asylums and orphanages in the 40's and 50's and even as recently as the 80's. It was very cleverly written and obviously a lot of research had gone into it. However - the Registered Nurse apprenticeship in these times was 3 years (not 2 years) - both in NSW and Vic.
I was bitterly disappointed in the ending of this book - so would probably not recommend.
this is the first book by this author that I have ever read and I thoroughly enjoyed it, a real page turner. Although maybe with some of the subject manner I shouldnt really say "enjoyed" as it was quite horrible in some aspects, but it was a compelling read. I had read some reviews before I started the book, so I knew that the ending would leave some loose ends, so I was prepared for that and therefore not disappointed by the ending like some other readers. I found it fascinating discovering more and more about Snow Delaney and her disturbing way of thinking, and the little details in the book that accurately described locations and events in Sydney and Melbourne really brought the story to life and made it seem like a real unsolved Australian mystery rather than a work of fiction. And you have to laugh at a book when it includes a budgie named Tony Abbott!! -)
I've enjoyed some of this author's other books, and found this one intensely readable -- but then came the let-down of the ending, or the non-ending. A real cop-out. It read as if Overington simply got sick of the book and couldn't resolve the mystery with which it began, or became so caught up in the main character's story that she just decided not to bother with tying up the loose end. Or did part of the manuscript get lost on the way to the publisher? I've seldom felt so let down by a book.
I have loved other books by Caroline Overington and this one promised to be just as good....I was however disappointed.
